Choosing the right fishing reel for kingfish trip is very important. A good sturdy reel will make all the difference on how hard you are able to pull on these monsters. It's not only the castability of the reel but also its drag system which will be put to test when hooked up with a monster Kingfish.
Choose right fishing reel for kingfish
Most reels in the market are made of aluminium, so it's important to have a good grade of aluminium alloy but also its strength. For example if you use an old reel which has been used over and over again there is a high probability that part by parts are being replaced with other metals including zinc alloys which are not too strong for big game fishing.
A very important part of any fishing reel is its drag system. A good drag system will prevent the line from overrunning when hooked up on a fish which pulls hard or even on a fish that has jumped out of the water during the fight.
There are different types of Drag Systems which you need to know about before buying your next fishing reel.
The first Drag System is the manual drag system, this system needs to be adjusted manually to prevent the line from overrunning or loosing too much line when being tussled on by a powerful fish. This is fine if you are just starting out as you are learning how to set your drag properly but once you have gained more experience in kingfish fishing you should look into getting a more advanced drag system.
The second Drag System is the adjustable Drag System, although it's not easy to use this system will be your best friend when tackling up a good fish. In general there are two types of adjustable drags one which you can adjust while fighting a fish and another one that needs to be adjusted on land before you go out fishing. I would suggest the second one as the first type can jam and is very hard to use in general.
